When autumn settles over Copenhagen and the evenings grow dark early, there is a Nepali festival that fills homes with light, color and the smell of something sweet frying in the kitchen. Tihar, often called the festival of lights, is one of the most heartfelt celebrations in Nepal, and at Maiya Nepali Kitchen on Amager we love sharing its spirit with our guests. If you are looking for a warm place to experience real Nepali hospitality this season, you are very welcome at our table.
What is Tihar?
Tihar is a five-day festival celebrated across Nepal in the autumn. Rows of small oil lamps and marigold garlands brighten doorways, and families gather to honor light, gratitude and the bonds between loved ones. Each day carries its own meaning, from honoring animals who share our lives to the much-loved Bhai Tika, when siblings celebrate one another. It is a time of togetherness, generosity and good food, which is exactly the feeling we try to bring into every meal at Maiya.
Here in Copenhagen the festival reminds many Nepali families of home, and for anyone curious about Nepali culture it is a wonderful doorway into the traditions behind the cooking. You do not need to travel far to feel some of that warmth. A short trip to our kitchen on Amager is enough.
Festive flavors on the Nepali table
Food sits at the heart of Tihar. Homes fill with sweet and savory treats prepared from family recipes, the kind passed carefully from one generation to the next. At Maiya our cooking follows that same path, built on traditional Nepali home cooking rather than shortcuts, so the dishes taste the way they are meant to.
During the darker autumn months, the comfort of a proper Nepali meal is hard to beat. A few of the dishes that capture that festive, homely feeling include:
- Dal bhat — the soulful plate of lentils, rice and sides that defines Nepali comfort eating.
- Momo — tender steamed dumplings that are a favorite at any gathering and a reason many people search for momo in Copenhagen.
- Thali sets — a complete, balanced meal that lets you taste several flavors at once, perfect for a celebratory evening.
You can explore the full range of dishes on our menu and find the ones that speak to your mood. Whether you want something gentle and warming or rich and spiced, there is a plate waiting for you.
Why celebrate Tihar at a Nepali restaurant in Amager
Tihar is about sharing, and there is something special about gathering friends and family around food that carries real meaning. As a nepalesisk restaurant in København, we want our guests to feel that sense of welcome the moment they step in. The lamps of Tihar stand for hope and warmth after darkness, and a shared meal does much the same thing on a cold Copenhagen night.
If you have never tried Nepali food before, the festive season is a lovely time to start. Our dishes are made to be enjoyed slowly, in good company, with flavors that reveal themselves bite by bite. And if Nepal is already close to your heart, we hope a visit brings back memories of home.
Planning a bigger celebration
Tihar is often marked with larger gatherings, and we are glad to help you host one. Alongside our restaurant, we offer a private party hall that you can rent for events, so your family and friends can celebrate together in one place. You will find the details at our party hall page, and we are happy to talk through what you have in mind.
